Abilene's climate punishes a leaky building from three directions.

The Big Country doesn't do mild. Summer parks average July highs around 95°F, with records near 110° and hot years stacking up 40-plus triple-digit days — 2012 logged 40 of them at Abilene Regional. Then winter arrives with real freezes, occasional ice, and a normal snowfall around five inches — one of the wider annual temperature swings in Texas. And running through all of it is the third factor everyone here knows: the West Texas wind, which pressurizes a leaky building and pushes outside air through every gap, crack, and penetration year-round.

That third factor is why insulation alone isn't enough out here. Fiberglass slows heat but does nothing about wind-driven air infiltration — the dust on your windowsills is the proof it's getting through. How much does spray foam insulation cost in Abilene?

It depends on the area sprayed, the foam type (open- or closed-cell), and the thickness needed to hit your R-value target. Open-cell costs less per board foot and suits attics and interior walls; closed-cell costs more but delivers roughly double the R-value per inch plus rigidity and moisture resistance for metal buildings. Is spray foam worth it in the Big Country specifically?

The math here is unusually strong because our climate cuts both ways. Abilene swings from 40-plus triple-digit days in a hot summer to genuine freezes and ice in winter, so a sealed envelope saves in both seasons — and the constant West Texas wind makes air-sealing worth more here than in calmer parts of the state. Open-cell or closed-cell — which do I need?

Short version: open-cell (~R-3.6/inch) is a cost-effective air seal for attics and interior walls. Closed-cell (~R-6 to R-7/inch) is denser and rigid — the right call for metal buildings, shops, and tight cavities, which the Big Country has plenty of. We recommend per area and put the reasoning in your written estimate.

Do you insulate metal buildings and barndominiums?
